Neuro-Developmental Assessments
Neuro-Developmental Assessment Services
Neuro-developmental assessments provide a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s cognitive, adaptive, behavioural, and developmental functioning. These assessments are designed to clarify diagnosis, inform supports and interventions, and assist families, schools, and services (such as NDIS) to make informed decisions.
Scope of Assessment
Neurodevelopmental assessments may include evaluation of:
Cognitive functioning
Intellectual ability, reasoning, problem-solving, attention, and working memory, using standardised psychometric measures.Adaptive functioning
Daily living skills, communication, socialisation, and functional independence across home, school, and community settings.Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Assessment of social communication, restricted or repetitive behaviours, sensory differences, and developmental history, aligned with DSM-5-TR criteria.Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Evaluation of attention regulation, impulsivity, executive functioning, and behavioural patterns across settings.Behavioural and emotional functioning
Assessment of emotional regulation, behavioural presentation, mental health factors, and the interaction between neurodevelopmental differences and behaviour.
Assessments are tailored to the referral question and the individual’s age, presentation, and context.
Assessment Process
Clarification of Referral and History
The process begins with clarification of the referral purpose and a detailed developmental, medical, educational, and psychosocial history. Input from caregivers, schools, and other professionals is incorporated where appropriate.
Standardised Assessment and Observation
Assessment includes standardised cognitive and behavioural measures, structured observation, and clinical interview. Information is gathered across multiple sources to ensure findings reflect real-world functioning rather than performance in a single setting.
Integration and Formulation
Results are integrated into a clear formulation that explains strengths, challenges, and how cognitive, adaptive, and neurodevelopmental factors interact. Where diagnostic criteria are met, diagnoses are made in accordance with DSM-5-TR guidelines.
Reporting and Feedback
Reports are written in clear, practical language and include:
Assessment findings and interpretation
Diagnostic conclusions where applicable
Strengths and support needs
Practical recommendations for home, school, and services
Feedback is provided to ensure results are understood and can be meaningfully applied.
Professional Standards
All neurodevelopmental assessments are conducted in accordance with:
AHPRA registration standards
AHPRA Code of Conduct
APS Ethical Guidelines
